Half Term in The Borders

With Christmas now but a distant memory, it's time to start thinking about how to make the upcoming half-term week memorable and enjoyable for kids and mums and dads. From Monday 12 to Friday 16 February the schools will be out in The Borders and while many might take the opportunity to jet off for a bit of sun, or Alpine fun, those staying put will still find plenty of things to do right here in The Borders. To help you get started, I've put together a blog post with some cool ideas. Full disclosure: I have two young kids of my own, and I'm researching and writing this blog with their entertainment in mind, as well as that of my lovely readers! I have had good feedback on similar efforts in the past which you can read here , here and here.

Dawyck Botanical Garden

Dawyck is a 5 star visitor attraction, a 65 acre botanical garden of national importance located between Lyne and Drumelzier in beautiful Upper Tweeddale. It opens for the season on 1 February and early in the growing season you can enjoy it’s renowned snowdrop collection, as well as the incredible heritage trees on display. A true highlight of the season in Peeblesshire. You can also find snowdrop walks in the grounds of Cringletie House Hotel and Dryburgh Abbey, who host a snowdrop day on Saturday 17 February.

Visit the Dawyck Website to find out more.

Alpaca Treks

If you are looking for an outdoorsy activity with a twist, get booked up to walk or just meet some Alpacas! A few places offer Aplaca treks in The Borders, Bierhope are based on a remote hill farm in the stunning Scottish side of The Cheviots, and closer to my home are Velvethall Alpacas in the heart of The Tweed Valley. Both have very limited space left for half term, so don’t delay!

A day at The Pictures

Of course, I am writing all this in the full knowledge that half term is February - the weather doesn’t always play ball. If that’s the case then a day at the cinema is on the cards - Galashiels Pavilion Cinema is our regions brilliant independent picture house, and they are likely to be showing Marvel’s Madam Web, Pixar’s Turning Red and (for a Valentines Day treat your partner will thank you for) Bob Marley - One Love. It’s so important to support local cinemas, and school holidays are usually bumper weeks for them so get yourself along to the flicks!

A romantic day in The Borders most romantic spot…

When it comes to Valentine's Day, many restaurants compete to offer the most romantic experience. However, for those who prefer a more secluded and unique date, a stroll around the tranquil, haunting ruins of Dryburgh Abbey is the perfect choice. Located in a peaceful location by the meandering River Tweed, this stunning ruin is well known, but by virtue of its location still feels a hidden gem in The Borders. To make the most of your visit (and to keep your partner onside!), why not book a table for afternoon tea or dinner at the nearby hotel and make it a truly unforgettable Valentine's Day.

Litter picking

I know what you're thinking - litter picking may not be the most exciting way to spend your February break! However, please take a moment to hear me out. I believe that litter devalues Scotland and that it is important to take a wee bit of personal action. Keep Scotland Beautiful has declared a litter emergency and is urging us to move towards a true circular economy as soon as possible. Even though it may be disheartening to see litter on the streets, there is a great sense of satisfaction that comes with cleaning it up! My eldest daughter is a dedicated litter picker and her and I are committed to doing our part to keep Scotland clean this year. Check out the Keep Scotland Beautiful website for ideas on how you can help too.

Get the seaside to yourself…

With its steep cliffs, charming harbourside villages, and the enigmatic ambiance of the North Sea, the Berwickshire Coast is a magnificent place to spend a day. Although February may not be the ideal time to visit this part of the world (don't expect ice cream vans or a tan), the adventurous and well-prepared (sturdy footwear and a good jacket are essential) will be rewarded with stunning beaches and a virtually private coastline. While we'll be exploring the Berwickshire coast in detail later in the year, here are a few recommendations to keep in mind…

St. Abb’s Head (pictured above) is a wonderful walk and even in winter with birds subdued and plants just starting to wake up it is a place I would recommend visiting for its peace and natural beauty.

A little further North up the Berwickshire Coastal Path you will come to Pease Bay, a good spot for surfing, as is Coldingham Bay to the South. Choppy winter weather means bigger waves - just remember a wetsuit!

The coast boasts a stunning geology that is sure to catch your eye. A visit to Siccar Point will take you to Hutton's unconformity, which is considered one of the most remarkable geological wonders worldwide, providing evidence to prove the great age of our planet.

Finally, on the border with East Lothian (who have an even more impressive coastline - I am not totally Borders biased on here!), you will find Dunglass Burn, with a quiet lane leading to spectacular, rocky beach which is perfect for swimming or just getting away from it all.

And finally, a TVB Tour…
